How SCIG Transforms Associations

Building Real Commercial Success

Our team members have led and managed industry, commodity and regulatory bodies and associations, through some of the most difficult environments imaginable—by formulating strategies, executing responses, and managing uncertainty and instability in real time.

What makes SCIG Associations distinctive is the way our business intelligence operations reinforce this experience. Recently, we launched two studies — the Top 25 Complaints from Association Members and the Top 25 Concerns of Senior Association Leadership. Taken together, they confirm and sharpen the lessons drawn from our work, showing clearly where member expectations and executive concerns converge, and where associations are most at risk. Just as importantly, they validate the solutions we have already implemented successfully in practice.

Revitalizing Associations

Our direct work with associations demonstrates this clearly.

Association Transformation

We have transformed associations that were fractured internally and rebuilt them from the ground up. This has included managing hostile or dysfunctional boards, correcting operational mismanagement, rebuilding union relations, re-engaging alienated members, expanding and diversifying revenue streams, and resolving conflicts over organizational mission, service lines and priorities, while reducing operating expenditures up to 25%. These are situations in which the very machinery of the association had broken down, and we restored them to acknowledged sector leaders.

Commodity Boards & Regulatory Body Turnarounds

We have restored credibility and performance to commodity boards and regulatory bodies that had lost legitimacy with their stakeholders, including their oversight Ministries. We have reestablished trust with members, repaired relationships with government and oversight bodies, aligned governance with strategy, operations, annual budgeting, employee performance management thereby recasting these organizations as acknolwedged leaders within their sectors. These are environments where credibility and authority had eroded—and we rebuilt it.

U.S. & Canadian Trade Actions

Spearheaded and executed sector responses to American countervailing and anti-dumping trade actions. This included full carriage of the response to the U.S. Deparment of Commerce investigation in Ontario, proactively forging alliances among U.S. industry partners, and lobbying the U.S. Congress and Executive Branch. Directed the Canadian legal response before the U.S. Department of Commerce and at hearings of the U.S. International Trade Commission.

Successfully developed and implemented counter-strategies in both Canada and the U.S. to block and neutralize Country of Origin Labelling non-tariff trade barrier advanced by domestic U.S. lobbies and legislators, protecting Canadian member firms from sudden loss of market access at an estimated worth of  over $250 million annually.

Industry Restructuring & Privatization Crises

Developed and executed sector-wide responses to industry restructuring shocks, government mergers, association mergers and consolidation, and global disruptions including the Great Recession, the Sub-Prime Financial Crisis, SARS-1 and the COVID-19 pandemics— ensuring member firms were able to mitigate damage, while capitalizing on the opportunities the crisis presented.

Commercial Growth, Sales & Partnerships

Transformed associations during times of crisis from being passive industry representatives and service providers into proactive drivers of business growth. We secured off-take sale agreements— including a $5 billion agreement with China over 5 years; forged joint ventures; and established strategic alliances that delivered real customers, contracts and revenue for members—not symbolic trade missions or activities that produced little tangible value.

We understand what works and what does not. Our clients avoid dead-end approaches and costly missteps, gaining operational plans that are both practical and durable, and grounded in experience.

SCIG strives to solve your internal problems and create competitive advantage to your members. SCIG’s advisors have been in the room, at the table, and on the ground— formulating the plan, driving the execution, and managing the outcomes in real time.
